National Poetry Month
By Hannah C.
April is National Poetry Month and the beginning of spring. After what seemed to be a long winter, poetry makes spring all the more refreshing. In Ms. Amato’s Communication Skills class, students prepared for poetry recitation. Sarah C., a student in Communication Skills, blew the class away with her beautiful recitation of the poem “The Road Not Taken” by Robert Frost. Her visual aid was a fabulous painting that she created herself that portrayed what she believed the poem was about. The painting was of a yellow wood and a road protruding from the middle of a mass of trees. The splash of yellow and in depth detail put into the painting was a great visual for those in the audience to receive the message of the poem. Each student did a great job in their presentations and started the month of poetry out with a bang.
Poetry recitation is not the only way Ms. Amato’s Communication Skills class will celebrate National Poetry Month. April 30, 2009 will be Poem In Your Pocket Day and each student will be required to have a poem in their pocket. This tradition started with a poem written by a children’s author, Beatrice Schenk de Regniers, according to Associated Content. The poem is called “Keep a Poem in Your Pocket” and New York was inspired by it in 2002 and started the celebration of Poem In Your Pocket Day. Many people continue to celebrate this “holiday” by pulling poems out of their pockets and sharing it with anyone willing to listen. April 30th marks the end of National Poetry Month, but brings joy to those that have passion and willingness to hear the poetry of others.
