The Mountie Fitness Program helps students to stay healthy

The Mountie Fitness Program is an activity held after school at Stroudsburg Junior High School to give students an opportunity to get exercise while having fun.
“I think it’s a fantastic program because its gets students mentally and physically involved and provides a safe environment after school,” says Mrs. Varin, who serves as the school nurse and is a leader of the program.
The program is open to all eighth and ninth graders in the building who are motivated to get physically fit. It is held after school every Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday until four o’clock.
All participants are encouraged to try their best at each session and also learn about ways to improve their health.
Each day, the program follows the following format: students run around the school hall for 10 minutes, then have a race around one lap of the school, and then proceed into the gymnasium.
In the gymnasium, the members stretch for a short time. Then they can select a piece of fruit to eat while the nurse speaks about ways to improve the health of your body.
After this, all of the students split up into groups based on the activities of the day. The students can choose from a variety of activities such as flag football, basketball, and a trip to the weight room.
The entire program is split up into three sessions: one for fall, winter, and spring. The sessions are divided up, so students can sign up for seasons in which they are not participating in other sports.
“It’s fun,” says a member of the program, “I think it’s very fun and entertaining because of the large variety of activities.”
The Mountie Fitness Program is a very well-run and well-received after-school activity.
