The Scream, is the Stroudsburg Junior High School newspaper written and produced by the students enrolled in the Introduction to Journalism course. The Stroudsburg Junior High School student council sponsored the United Way with a fundraiser where anyone who paid a dollar during lunch could wear the jersey of their favorite team.

For the past 24 years, ESL Thanksgiving has been an annual event that gives students an opportunity to experience a traditional American Thanksgiving. ESL Thanksgiving was started over two decades ago by Mrs. Schreck, an ESL teacher. The story of how this event came about is very interesting.

The Junior High student council hosted their annual food drive from November 9th to November 12th to collect food for people not so fortunate during the Thanksgiving season. Together we collected over 130 bags of food!

Jared Fogel, spokesman for Subway, appeared at Stroudsburg Junior High School on Friday, October 9th in an event initiated by Amanda. As part of her graduation project, Amanda wanted to raise money for the homeless, while teaching kids how to exercise and make healthy eating choices.

“Don’t ever believe for a second that you don’t matter, that no one will miss you when you’re gone. You are loved beyond belief.” These are the words of Mr. John Halligan, who lost his thirteen-year-old son, Ryan, to suicide. Mr. Halligan visits schools around the country, telling Ryan’s story. Stroudsburg was lucky enough to have this special guest come to our school on Wednesday, September 9, 2009, to tell us what happened to Ryan just a few years ago.

April is National Poetry Month and the beginning of spring. After what seemed to be a long winter, poetry makes spring all the more refreshing. In Ms. Amato’s Communication Skills class, students prepared for poetry recitation. Sarah C., a student in Communication Skills, blew the class away with her beautiful recitation of the poem “The Road Not Taken” by Robert Frost. Her visual aid was a fabulous painting that she created herself that portrayed what she believed the poem was about.

Would you like to be amongst a crowd of almost 2 million people? My family and I went to Washington D.C. to see Barack Obama become the 44th president of the United States. It was freezing cold. It was more crowded than I ever imagined possible. Trying to walk one block took half an hour of pushing, shoving, and inching our way forward.

On January 20, 2009, the 44th President of the United States was inaugurated. A train, the “Obama Express,” made three stops before the President-Elect made it to Washington, D.C. The President-Elect took the same train route that former President Lincoln took in 1861. He traveled to Pennsylvania, Delaware, Maryland, and then onto Washington D.C.

Mr. Vernon’s brother, Sergeant Vernon, of the United States Army, is one of the brave soldiers who have served in Iraq. He visited our school on December 23, 2008. All of his stories explaining his experiences in Iraq kept the students of Mr. Vernon’s Social Studies classes on the edge of their seats throughout the day.
